Once Aubrey decided she wanted a Strawberry Shortcake party I set to work making plans on how to incorporate what she wanted and my vision of a cute strawberry party. Since her birthday is in January we are typically stuck inside and I wanted to have some fun activities for the kids, I immediately knew that I wanted the kids to make strawberry jam. Since jam can be messy, especially if you are 4 I decided to make aprons for the kids to wear and they could double as party favors.
I found some duck canvas on sale at JoAnn’s and bought red & pink for the girls and green for the boys.
I used an old apron I made for Aubrey as a template for the shape and simplified it so I could mass produce it.
Once I had the aprons all cut out it was time to make the binding. I was having a particularly bad day (my husband erased ALL of the contacts from my phone and could not recover them) so I didn’t want anything complicated or time consuming. I found this roll of ribbon that I got for free years ago and it was the perfect size for binding.
I folded it over, pressed and then pinned to the apron. Simple. Done.
They needed a little pizazz so I decided to add a ruffle to the bottom. Turns out duck cloth is not ideal to make ruffles with! It took forever and I finally gave up and decided Aubrey’s could be the special one with a ruffle, after all she is the birthday girl.
They still needed something, especially since I didn’t put ruffles on all of them so I decided I would add a strawberry pocket. I drew a strawberry and a leaf and then cut them out of fabric I had left over from the dress I made for Aubrey. I ditched the pocket idea and just sewed them straight on to the apron. Just what they needed…so sweet!
And finally I couldn’t resist personalizing them for each kid. My friend Kristi has an embroidery machine and she was super sweet and embroidered all of the aprons for me. We traded favors and I made her a banner and some party decorations for her daughter’s birthday, which you can see here.
I love how they turned out and the kids all looked super cute in their apron making strawberry jam! Pictures from the party coming soon.
