I can’t wait for the 4th of July. Not only do we get to spend time at one of our favorite places, the Frio River, but I absolutely love celebrating this patriotic holiday with lots of red, white and blue crafts, desserts and parties! I’ve teamed up with 110 other bloggers for a fun 4th of July inspired party, Three Cheers for the Red, White and Blue! Not only will I be sharing my easy Star Spangled Desserts, but you can also check out over 100 other projects to get you in the patriotic mood.
A few years ago we hosted a family 4th of July BBQ and I made some red, white and blue dessert kabobs. Everyone loved them and several years later they are still a popular treat and one that gets shared over and over from my site. This year I decided to try a new twist on those popular treats and made Star Spangled Desserts that will be a total crowd pleaser with the young and old. Oh, and did I mention they were easy!
I used store bought Puff Pastry sheets, a star shaped cookie cutter, fresh fruit and cool whip. Easy enough, right? I rolled out the pastry sheets as directed, cut them with my star shaped cookie cutter and placed them on a lightly greased baking sheet. To get the golden brown delicious flaky crust I brushed them with an egg wash and lightly sprinkled them with sugar. Bake at 350 for 10-15 minutes until light golden brown.
Once they were cooled I carefully opened up the pastry shell and added a dollop of cool whip to the bottom side of the star. Next, I filled it with a mixture of sliced strawberries and blueberries and topped it off with another small dollop of whip cream to help the top of the star spangled shell stay in place.
With the leftover pastry sheets I decided to use my mini star shaped cookie cutter and make Star Spangled Kabobs just for the kids. Instead of piling all of the goodies inside the pastry shell I used small skewers and alternated layers to make these patriotic desserts.
Of course, I think everything is way more tasty and fun when served on a stick. Wouldn’t you agree?
These festive Star Spangled Desserts are a delicious combination of fruit, flaky crust and a fluffy cream. The perfect dessert sandwich for your 4th of July festivities. Yumm! These little stars look delicious & I love that they are filled with fruit & whipped cream instead of things that are overly sweet.

These look awesome! And definitely something my 4 year old can help with (though ours will probably end up being train shaped if he has his way)
Do you think I can make these the night before or will the whipped cream flatten overnight?
Mariah says
Katie, you can make everything the night before just don’t assemble them until you want to serve them. The cool whip left on overnight will make them soggy, hope your star (or train shaped) treats turn out yummy!
