This year I decided to decorate my kids playroom for Christmas with a nod to our collection of vintage toys. My Christmas decorations throughout the house are rustic, and fairly traditional with just a touch of sparkle and glam. I like to keep things neutral, like our Winter Woodland Christmas tree, so that it coordinates with the rest of the house. So, it was lots of fun to create bright and colorful Retro Light Bulb Painted Ornaments to liven up our Christmas decor in one of the most playful rooms of our house.
I found these wooden retro light bulb ornaments at Michaels and knew they would be perfect for our vintage toy themed Christmas decor in the kids playroom. I also picked up a few of the other wooden ornaments with holiday greetings to paint with bright DecoArt Americana acrylic paint. A big thanks to DecoArt for making this project possible and for inspiring me to reach outside my comfort zone and try a new colorful trend.
Since I was mixing things up from our normal Christmas decor I wanted lots of bright colors for our retro light bulbs. I used Sour Apple, Santa Red, Peony Pink, Sea Breeze, Peacock Teal and Dazzling Metallics Shimmering Silver.
I started by painting the top of the light bulb with the Dazzling Metallics Shimmering Silver.
Next, I painted the base of the retro light bulb with one of the colorful Americana acrylic paints.
While the paint was still wet I sprinkled them with Crystal Glamour Dust. I am in love with this stuff and had to seriously restrain myself from adding it to everything! I love that it gives the ornaments just the slightest little shimmer, but then again who doesn’t love a little sparkle?!?
Once the paint dried I hung the retro light bulb ornaments on our mini white Christmas tree, along with the wooden holiday sayings and mini colorful glitter ornaments.
I think these hand painted retro light bulb ornaments are the perfect addition to our vintage toy themed Christmas decor. I’m excited to mix things up from our traditional decor with a little bit of playful, bright and cheerful Christmas decor.
How do you decorate for Christmas? Have you ever made your own Christmas ornaments?

Thank you Christina, and yes the Glamour Dust is the best! I have to exercise self control and not make everything in my house sparkly! 🙂
