I absolutely love Halloween, and I especially love our Trunk or Treat tradition. I am passionate about creating a fun and interactive trunk-or-treat station, and over the years, I’ve developed some really engaging trunks. From the Black Hat Bake Shoppe Trunk or Treat, where we handed out homemade bakery treats, to a CarnEVIL Trunk or Treat where there were carnival games and “rotten” candy, to a Haunted Mermaid Cove, where a mystical underwater wonderland springs to life.
With a little creativity, you can transform your car into a haunted shipwreck that delights trick-or-treaters of all ages.
Pirate Ship Trunk or Treat Idea
Every year, I’m looking to top those ideas, so I decided to go big and create an interactive Pirate Ship Trunk or Treat. I started by creating a pirate ship out of cardboard boxes and covering it in Weathered Wood Bulletin Board Paper. I used black spray paint to create small porthole windows on each side of the ship.
Every good pirate ship needs a strong mast, so I built one out of PVC pipe and a canvas drop cloth. I spray-painted the mast with brown spray paint and then draped the torn-up drop cloth I purchased at Home Depot over each section. I added a small pirate flag to the very top. I secured the mast to the trunk using zip ties. Then I used blue plastic tablecloths to create the water around the pirate ship, where the skeleton mermaid is right at home.
Inside the trunk of my car, I created a scene with all of the pirates’ loot, including a pirate treasure chest full of gold coins, toys, and candy. I gathered up gold chargers, jewelry, gold coins, and other “treasures” from around my house and put them in wooden boxes. My pirate Life-Size Skeletons kept their treasures safe with the DIY Dynamite Pirate Props I created.
Before our little trick-or-treaters can get their candy, they will have to brave the wide open ocean waters, sneak past the mermaid skeleton, and climb aboard the “Galloping Ghost” to retrieve their treasure. Or if they dared, they could walk the plank to get a closer look at the pirates’ loot.
Pirate Games for Trunk or Treat
In addition to this fun pirate-themed scene, we also had interactive games for the kids to play, like our DIY Pirate Hook Ring Toss. I like to have some fun little prizes to hand out when they play the games, like pirate patches, pouches full of gold coins, or pirate tattoos. The kids love playing the games and getting some extra loot.
A pirate trunk or treat is all about fun, fantasy, and just the right touch of spooky. With a few clever props and some swashbuckling spirit, your trunk will have trick-or-treaters lining up to claim their share of the loot.
