During this busy time of year, I do lots of entertaining. From hosting Thanksgiving to annual holiday parties, I look forward to setting a warm and welcoming table for our guests to enjoy delicious food and great conversation.
This Merry & Bright tablescape is perfect for a Favorite Things Party or your annual Christmas Eve dinner with a bright and bold twist. To get this merry & bright look I created a few simple projects, including these Merry and Bright DIY Christmas Chargers.
What is the Purpose of a Charger Plate
In a table setting, a charger, also known as a service plate, serves both functional and decorative purposes. It is a large, decorative base plate placed underneath the dinner plates that visually provides elegance and enhances table decor. Practically, they serve as protection from the table and tablecloth becoming dirty and help retain heat in dinnerware.
During multi-course meals, the charger remains on the table until the main course is served. Other dishes, like soup bowls or salad plates, are placed on top of it and are cleared after each course.
While chargers are typically reserved for more formal dinners, they are super practical and I love incorporating them into our meals, especially during the holiday season.
How to Make Cheap Charger Plates
Can’t find holiday decor to match your Merry and Bright Holiday Tablesetting? Have you ever wanted to make your own DIY charger plates? It’s so easy. Here are the step-by-step instructions to make cheap Merry and Bright DIY Christmas Chargers.
Supplies:
- Americana Multi-Surface Paint, Cotton Ball
- Americana Acrylic Paint
- Bahama Blue
- Sea Breeze
- Dessert Turquoise
- Cinnamon Drop
- Peony Pink
- Dragon Fruit
- Pink Chiffon
- Americana Gloss Sealer
- Paintbrush
- Chargers
- Sandpaper
Step 1:
Lightly sand the plastic chargers and use a damp cloth to remove any of the dust. Prime the chargers using the multi-surface white cotton ball paint.
Step 2:
Drop a pea-sized amount of the Americana acrylic paint on the charger. I wanted my chargers to have an ombre effect so I used colors in the same color family.
Step 3:
Use a paintbrush to begin blending the colors creating an ombre effect. Add more paint as necessary to get the desired look.
Step 4:
Once the paint is dry spray a protective coat of Americana Gloss Sealer on the chargers to help protect them.
It is important to note that the chargers are not food-safe. They are intended to be used under your festive holiday plates.
Set the chargers aside and let them dry completely before using. Meanwhile, it’s time to get crafty with the new Cricut Maker. This is one of my favorite new craft tools because there are so many possibilities for creating personalized home decor, party favors, and more.
