As a kid, one of the most anticipated traditions is creating a Christmas wish list and writing letters to Santa. When you are a kid all the anticipation and excitement of the holidays start with this list. Create a keepsake DIY Scroll Christmas Wish List Ornament to capture your kid’s favorite things that year.
A few years ago I created a themed Polar Post Christmas Tree inspired by the time-honored tradition of writing letters to Santa. One of my favorite elements was the DIY Christmas Wish List Ornaments. I made one for each of my kids to remember the things they asked Santa for that year. It is such a sweet keepsake and I love pulling these ornaments out each year, it’s fun to see how much things have changed year to year.
This year when I shared pictures of that colorful Christmas tree and the ornaments I received lots of questions on Instagram about how I made them. I realized I never created a step-by-step tutorial for the DIY ornaments, so I figured it was high time I did.
How to Make DIY Christmas Wish List Ornament
It’s super easy to create these keepsake ornaments and you can make them every year to commemorate your kid’s lists for Santa. All you need are a few supplies, and less than 10 minutes.
Supplies:
- Wooden Spool
- White Copy Paper
- Black Marker or Pen
- Red Baker’s Twine
- Ruler
- Glue
Start by measuring the width of your wooden spool. You can find the wooden spools in the wood craft section at your local craft store. They usually come in a variety of sizes, I used medium-sized spools for my ornaments.
Once you have measured the spool and know how wide you need to make your list use a paper trimmer to cut a piece of white copy paper down to size.
Place the paper next to the ruler and measure about 2″ down from the top. Draw a line across the paper at this point, this will help you make sure your list shows once it is rolled up on the scroll.
Use a black marker and have your kids write down their top gifts they are asking Santa for this year. Be sure to include the year at the end of the list so you can remember what age and year they created this list.
Finally, add a dab of glue to the back of the list and attach it to the wooden spool. Roll the list around the spool and then let it naturally unravel.
Cut a piece of red and white Baker’s twine and run it through the middle of the spool. Tie the pieces together to create a hanger for your ornament.
Hang this cute keepsake on your tree to remember your kid’s special Christmas wishes.
