The Boxtrolls Movie Night and Edible Popcorn Boxes

I can’t think of a better way to start the weekend than cuddling up on the couch with my kiddos for family movie night. It’s the perfect way for us to unwind from a busy week and it’s an easy and inexpensive way to create wonderful memories together. I’m always looking for new kid-friendly movies for our movie nights and the other day while I was shopping at Walmart I spotted The Boxtrolls, a movie my kids wanted to see in theaters and we just never got around to it. So of course, I picked up the DVD and decided to surprise the kids with The Boxtrolls Movie Night and Edible Popcorn Boxes for an extraordinary and fun movie night they won’t forget!

One of the reasons our family loves our ritual movies nights is because it’s an opportunity to teach our children and reinforce family values in a fun way. And this movie is no exception, The Boxtrolls are a lovable community of quirky, mischievous creatures who inhabit a cavern beneath the city of Cheesebridge and each one dons a special box unique to them. The underlying message of the film is about self acceptance, and that no matter how quite or small the voice of truth may be, it can always rise above the noise.

I decided that it would be fun to let the kids make and decorate their own edible popcorn boxes and while we were gathered around the table being creative we could talk about celebrating everyone’s unique characteristics that what makes them special. My kids loved this and you’ll be surprised at how easy these edible popcorn boxes are to make. Here is what you’ll need to create your own:

Supplies:

Pop Secret Home-Style Popcorn
Graham Crackers
Icing
Edible Food Markers

Start by breaking your graham crackers into 5 squares.

Give each kid one graham cracker square and let them draw their favorite Boxtroll characters box design. You could also let them design their own box and show off their creative personalities.

Use a piping bag filled with icing (royal icing works best, but if you don’t want to whip up a batch you can use store bought frosting) and pipe icing onto all four sides of one graham cracker square. Next, attach the 4 remaining graham crackers, including the decorated square, to the icing.

Let the icing dry for a few minutes to make sure your edible box is secure. Then fill with Pop Secret Home-Style Popcorn, our families favorite!
