When my kids were younger we always had an hour during our day where we would make art projects, play with Play-dough or just explore outside and maybe even make mud pies. My kids loved this time of the day, it was like a license to be as messy as possible without getting in trouble. Now that they are in school, a little older and busy with sports we don’t set aside as much time for this type of fun. But this fun, simple and easy Messy Balloon Pop Painting was a recent game changer and turned an ordinary Saturday into an extraordinary one!
The other day when school got out for the long holiday weekend one of my twins got in the car and asked what our plans were for the weekend. When I replied we didn’t have any she excitedly exclaimed that she wanted to make lots of art projects and do things like we used to during our special “art hour.” So of course we set out to create a fun and “messy” art project with things we had at home.
This is definitely one of those activities that is incredibly simple, but so fun for the kid. We definitely heard lots of giggles during this one! All you need are a few supplies and you’ll be having fun in no time.
Supplies:
- Balloons
- Paint (Washable Tempra Paint is ideal)
- White Poster Board
- Painters Tarp
First you’ll need to fill the balloons with the paint. I squeezed a generous amount of paint into each balloon. Since this was an impromptu activity we were using things we had at home and ended up using a mix of tempra paint and craft paint. I would definitely recommend using washable tempra paint for this activity. Once you’ve filled up the balloon with paint, blow it up and tie it closed.
Next, lay a tarp down in an open area and lay your white poster board and balloons on top.
Now for the fun part, let your kids stomp on the balloons to pop them and watch the paint splatter.
Some of our balloons were harder to pop by stomping on them then others so we ended up using a bamboo skewer to pop those.
Make sure your kids are wearing old clothes, because things are going to get messy!
Once all the paint filled balloons have popped you have a fun new piece of spatter paint art to enjoy.
I realized while watching my kids pop balloons and squeal with delight as the cool paint spattered on their skin, that your never too old to make time for some messy fun. And fortunately I know that life’s messy moments are easy to clean with Maytag laundry. Maytag’s newest Top Load Washer & Dryer pair is better built because they are designed, engineered and assembled in America and have the power to clean big league stains.

Our messy balloon pop painting was lots of fun and undoubtedly an activity that gave them the opportunity to let loose and enjoy being a kid. These days most of our messy moments come from sports practice and game days. Which is why we’ve teamed up with Maytag to share how you can win the opportunity of a lifetime – a grand prize trip to the World Series, plus a Maytag Top Load Washer and Dryer pair. Sliding diving and other “filthy” plays are some of the most fun and exciting parts of baseball, and nothing is better equipped to handle the filthiest of baseball stains (or messy balloon pop painting artwork) than Maytag washers and dryers. The MLB and Maytag are calling ball players of all ages to upload photos or videos of their Filthiest Plays of the Week or messy fun using #MyFilthiestPlay on Twitter or Instagram, for weekly prizes including the amazing grand prize trip to the World Series.
