One of my favorite things about being a mom is creating traditions for my family. I love traditions and I think they are so important. They allow families to connect generations, pass on cultural or religious beliefs, teach values and create extraordinary and lasting memories. The holidays are the perfect time to create family traditions, and with Halloween just around the corner our family is getting ready for one of our favorite traditions, with the help of the BOO It Forward campaign at Walmart. You can also get in the holiday spirit by visiting Walmart.com for all of your Halloween BOO Kit needs. These Fab-BOO-lous Halloween Boo Kits are a fun activity for the whole family and we’ve even taken it a step further and are sharing our tradition with friends with a Fab-BOO-lous Halloween Movie Night Party.
Every year my kids get excited about “BOOing” our neighbors. I started this simple tradition with my kids years ago and every year they look forward to surprising their friends with Halloween treats. But, this year I wanted to change things up and encourage our kids to practice compassion and kindness outside of their circle of friends. Instead of “BOOing” our neighbors we decided to create BOO kits and deliver them to homeless shelters, hospitals or families in need.
My kids loved the idea of changing our beloved Halloween tradition up and asked if their friends could help them create fab-BOO-lous kits too. I thought this was a brilliant idea and set to work to create a fun little Halloween Party. Inspired by the new Ghostbusters® movie I decided to incorporate ghosts into our party. While my son would have loved to cover everything in slime, just like they do in the movie, I opted to keep things a bit more simple…and clean with a nod to the classic ghosts of my childhood. “I ain’t afraid of no ghosts”, but with all the ghost balloons, treat boxes, cupcakes and BOO kits lurking around we had to call in the Ghostbusters for a special appearance at our Fab-BOO-lous Halloween Movie Night Party! My family was super excited to invite friends over for an outdoor movie night to watch the new Ghostbusters® movie while enjoying treats from our Spooktacular Sweet Treats Halloween Candy Cart.
I gathered a bunch of supplies so that the kids could decorate containers for all of the BOO Kit goodies we found at our local Wal-Mart store. One of my favorite ideas for the kits were these adorable Ghost Treat Buckets. It’s so easy to create that even your littlest guest will be able to do this one.
Here is what you need:
- Metal Container (we used a coffee can)
- White Duct Tape
- Black Paint Pen or Sharpie
- SNICKERS® Fun Size
- M&M’S® Fun Size
- Skittles® Original Fun Size
- Starburst® Fun Size
- Rice Krispies Treats®
- Halloween Novelty Items
- American Greetings® treat bags
- American Greetings® tissue paper
- American Greetings® Halloween stickers or decals
To create your Ghost Treat Buckets wrap the white Duct Tape around the bucket until it is completely covered.
Now, use a black Sharpie or paint pen to draw the eyes and mouth for your ghost.
Stuff the bottom of your bucket with tissue paper to build a nice base for your goodies.
At this point you are now ready to fill it with all the fun Halloween goodies. We filled the treat bags with SNICKERS® Fun Size candy, Skittles® Original Fun Size, Starburst® Fun Size, Rice Krispies Treats® in fun Halloween packaging, stickers and some of the Halloween toys. Then we filled each bucket with the bags and threw in some extra treats too.
Visit BOOItForward.com and download, print and attach one of these signs for your BOO It forward kits. Make sure you place both of the signs in your ghost treat bucket so that your recipients can #BOOItForward and create their own Halloween tradition filled with joy.
There you have, a super fun tradition that will be a fun memory for years to come. We decided to attach some DIY ghost balloons to our buckets and delivered them to a local hospital and women’s shelter. I even dropped off extra supplies so that they recipients could create their own BOO kits and pay it forward with a fun Halloween treat.
We wanted to thank all of the families who came to help us and BOO It Forward so we planned a spooktacular outdoor movie night! Our family loves outdoor movies, and now that the weather has finally cooled off a little it’s the perfect time to watch a movie under the stars. I kept things simple and set up a sweets and treats candy cart with popcorn, SNICKERS® Fun Size candy bars, cookies, chocolate dipped Rice Krispies Treats®, cupcakes and popcorn.
A Halloween movie night isn’t complete without a delicious popcorn recipe full of chocolaty goodness. I made a big batch of this Snickers Halloween Popcorn, and it was devoured in minutes. I guess next time, I’ll need to remember to make a double big batch. This recipe is so easy and you only need three ingredients.
- 1 Bag of Popped Popcorn
- 8-10 SNICKERS® Fun Size Candy Bars, chopped
- 1 Cup Milk Chocolate Candy Melts
- Pop your popcorn by using your favorite method. Lay out popcorn on a parchment or wax paper-lined cookie sheet.
- Cut up SNICKERS® Fun Size Candy Bars into little pieces.
- Melt the chocolate candy melts in the microwave on high for 1 minute. Stir, and heat for an additional 30 seconds if needed.
- Pour melted chocolate on top of popcorn and sprinkle the snickers bar pieces on top.
- Mix all together while chocolate is still hot! Let sit for 45 minutes!
Once everyone has filled their treat bags with treats it’s time to settle in for the movie with candy, popcorn and ghost themed treats! Ghostbusters® is the perfect family-friendly movie for your Halloween movie night and is available on Blu-ray and DVD in stores, at Walmart 10/11 and can be preordered on Blu-ray or DVD now! You could even pick up a couple of extra copies of this fun movie and include a copy in your Fab-BOO-lous BOO kits!

I love the details and thought you put into all of your party ideas. The blue and gold against the black and white is just terrific.
