Baby, it’s cold outside! Let’s get cozy with a fuzzy blanket and a warm cup of hot cocoa. Of course, not just any mug will do. You’ll want to sip your cocoa from a DIY Farmhouse Holiday Vinyl Mug.
These custom mugs are perfect for sipping a cup of coffee or hot chocolate on a cold winter day. I teamed up with Cricut to share this easy DIY project with you today. As you may already know, I love my Cricut! It is such a versatile crafting tool that allows me to customize and create projects that fit my style. I love having seasonal mugs to serve hot cocoa, but I don’t need a cabinet full of mugs that will only get used once a year.
That’s why I love using my Cricut and vinyl to personalize plain white mugs. It’s such a quick and simple way to turn something ordinary into something extraordinary. A few years ago I made these Oh Deer Mugs and I still love them, but I wanted something a little different to go with my Glam Farmhouse Christmas decor.
This project took me less than 15 minutes to make, which leaves me lots of extra time to invite my girlfriends over for a cup of hot cocoa while we chat and catch up.
Here is what you’ll need:
- Cricut Explore Air 2
- Gold Vinyl
- Transfer Tape
- Cutting Mat
- Cricut Tool Set
- Baby It’s Cold Outside SVG Image
- Mug
I purchased the Baby It’s Cold Outside SVG image on Etsy for this project. I love that you can create and use your own designs with the Cricut or you can purchase one of the 1000s of designs in the Cricut Design Space. The possibilities are endless when it comes to personalizing projects for birthday parties, holiday get-together’s, and gifts.
I opened up the file in the Cricut Design space and resized it so that it would fit on the front of my mug. I used gold vinyl for my design, but you could use any color that works with your holiday decor.
Once the image was cut I used the weeding tool to remove the negative space of the vinyl image.
Cut a piece of transfer tape the same size as your design and use the scraper tool to adhere it.
Carefully pull back the image and center the design on the front of the mug. Because the surface is not flat you want to be careful putting the image on the mug. I like to hold each side of the image and gently roll them inward. I put the curved middle part on the mug and carefully work my way outward as I smooth down the design.
I gently rub the image onto the mug making there aren’t any bubbles or wrinkles in the vinyl. Finally, peel back the transfer tape to reveal your new DIY Farmhouse Holiday Vinyl Mug.
Put them on a gold painted tray with napkins, paper straws, stir sticks and toppings for a simple and quick hot cocoa station.
These mugs would make a great gift idea too! Simply add a few packets of hot cocoa and deliver it to your friend, neighbors or teachers so they can warm up this winter with a pretty cup of hot cocoa.
This is just one of the many ways I use my Cricut to create easy projects that really transform the ordinary into something extraordinary. I have lots of people ask me about crafting with a Cricut machine. I usually hear from people who say they aren’t crafty and are worried that it will be too hard to use or they won’t know what to do. I always respond with “It’s so easy, you can do it!” With so many options and abilities there is something for everyone. If you are just looking to make quick and easy projects that transform store bought items, like our DIY Farmhouse Holiday Vinyl Mug, the Cricut is for you. Or, if you are looking to create jewlery or intricate designs and paper crafts for your wedding, the Cricut is for you. Want to make handmade signs and home decor? The Cricut is for you too! No matter what type of project you are looking to create I know you will love having the Cricut in your crafty tool box.

My wife, Aliyah, and I found your site through the #TotallyTerrificTuesday weekly link party and we’re so glad we did.
This is such a fun and versatile DIY craft and you’ve detailed the steps very thoroughly. My wife’s already favorited the ArtStudio54 Etsy shop and I can imagine a trip to the nearest Michael’s any day now for supplies!
With some age-appropriate help, this is such a great project to share with the kids, too, especially for teachers’ gifts. Thanks so much for putting this post together. We’re looking forward to more of them.

Is there a way to make these dishwasher safe? How long will the vinyl stay on and look nice? I’d like to make these as gifts but I’m worried about them not lasting.

Hi Lynn, I think the key is making sure you use good quality vinyl. I like to use the outdoor vinyl from Expressions vinyl and have a set of mugs that I made with vinyl over 2 years ago and they have held up just fine. I typically hand wash the mugs, but there are occasions were my husband throws them in the dishwasher and the vinyl has manged to hold up through those washes as well. Hope that helps!
