Hi Giggles Galore readers, it’s Cathy from Party HarDIY once again with another fun DIY project for you! This time, I’m sharing a DIY colorful summer place card holder that also doubles as a favor. That’s right , once dinner is over you can give your friend their place card which doubles as a holder for photos, cards, notes, fortune cookie fortunes- whatever they desire! Best of all, they are easy to make and super affordable. You’ll be whipping these up for everyone you know!
You will need:
- 1 Inch wood blocks
- Hexagon wood beads
- Wood Letters
- Acrylic paint
- Wire (I used 20 gauge)
- Jewelry tool- wire cutter
Directions
First up, paint your beads, blocks, and letters with your choice of colors. You may want to have a plan for what colors will match up, or you can pick the letter color first and mix and match from there. To paint your beads without the mess, check out this tutorial I made.
After everything’s dry, it’s time to assemble! Arrange your beads, blocks and letters in the order you want to glue them. First, take your glue gun and attach your letters to your blocks. When it comes to hot glue and fingers, my goal is always to avoid getting burned. That being said, put a thin line of glue on about half to 3/4 of your letter and press it down onto the block.
As your glue starts to harden, grab a toothpick and remove any excess glue around the letter to keep it looking neat. Mine came off really easily since I took it off right away. You’ll want it to be slightly cooled, but not fully dried.
Once your letter is attached, glue your bead on top of the block, with the best sides facing forwards and the unpainted part of the block at the bottom.
Now it’s time to make the wire holder! Twist your wire end 3 times to create the circle where it’ll hold your stuff. I used the end of my jewelry tools to shape it but you can use anything- a marker, thick pen, or even your pinky!
Once you’ve made your circle, cut the wire to size. Repeat for each holder, using the first wire as a guide for length.
To attach the wire to the block, put a dab of glue on the end of your wire and place it inside your bead, as straight as you can.
Then, make a nice place card for your friends and you’re ready to party! I made these with just some card stock, a circle punch, washi tape, and glitter letter stickers! To get the full tutorial for these, head over to my blog to find the post here. Plus, the place cards go together really nicely with the holders!
I love that these holders are so simple to make, but really make an impact with the vibrant colors and whimsy. Even if you don’t normally have assigned seating at your summer parties and BBQ’s, I think these would be great for adding a sweet photo of you and a friend as a small gift. Plus, sometimes it can be fun to switch things up a bit! After all, it would mean that no one would lose their cup since they know which seat is theirs. It’s a new solution to that age-old problem! So, grab your glue gun and supplies- it’s crafting time!
