I’m a pretty competitive person, but I also love rooting for the underdog. Who doesn’t love a feel-good movie or story about the triumph of the underdog? There is something so heart warming about the determination and effort put forth from the underdogs. We cling to the hope that despite all of the challenges and setbacks that their grit, determination and heart will come out on top. This past weekend I had the privilege of seeing an advanced screening of the new film, Eddie the Eagle and my heart soared as I sat on the edge of my seat rooting for Eddie, an unlikely underdog determined to conquer his dreams.
This feel-good sports flick about perseverance and courage is an inspiring movie for the whole family. The film, based on a true story, chronicles the unlikely rise of an underdog athlete and his dreams of participating in the 1988 Winter Olympics in the ski jump. It’s an incredibly genuine story about the performance of the most unlikely of champions, Eddie Edwards (Taron Egerton), an awkward 22-year-old from England who is pursuing his dream of competing in the Olympic games. With the reluctant Bronson Peary (Hugh Jackman), a washed-up drunken former Olympian, the pair set off to conquer fears and make dreams soar.
We decided to take our oldest daughter on a special date to see this movie. I loved that after watching the movie we had the opportunity to start a conversation with her about the importance of hard work, determination and pursuing your dreams. There is nothing better than listening to your children chatter on about their hopes and dreams. As a parent you want to give your kids everything you can to help them spread their wings and soar!
Growing up my parents were always encouraging me to dream big and supporting and encouraging me to follow those dreams. They were my biggest fans and even to this day they are still the first to cheer me on in everything that I do. When things would get tough or I would get discouraged, my mom would always tell me that for every “no” I would hear, every door that gets shut on my goals, there would always be a window open to help me get one step closer to achieving my dreams. It takes a tough and determined person to stay focused, and thanks to the wise advice of my mom despite set backs I would always get up and keep trying.
Just like Eddie Edwards in the film Eddie the Eagle, I want my daughter to remember to never give up on her dreams! So after our date night I came home and created this free printable to put up in her room. I wanted her to have a beautiful reminder to stay focused, work hard and let her dreams soar. A gentle reminder that nothing is impossible, as long as she is willing to work at it.
I would definitely encourage you to see this inspiring movie. It’s an exciting, uplifting, wonderful movie that will have your heart exploding with joy as you root for the lovable underdog.
