I’m excited to share this DIY chalky finish nightstand makeover I recently did for my daughter’s bright and bold bedroom makeover. I have partnered with DecoArt to show you how you can refurbish those hand-me-down pieces of furniture that just don’t fit in with your decor. I love the Americana Decor Chalky Finish paint, it’s so easy to use and the results are always amazing!
I picked up this little nightstand from a garage sale for $25. It’s a great piece of solid wood furniture, but it’s just simply outdated and in desperate need of a face lift.
One of the things I love about the Chalky Finish paint is that there is typically no need to sand your piece before painting. Let’s face it, I’m usually in a rush to finish one project and move on to the next so anything that eliminates steps is a winner in my book. I used the Americana Decor Chalky Finish paint in Lace, it’s the perfect creamy shade to achieve a vintage, time-worn look.
I painted several coats of the Chalky Finish paint and after the paint dried I used my electric sander to rough up the edges to match the same shabby chic look of my daughter’s bed.
Once I had achieved the look I wanted I used the Americana Decor Soft Touch Varnish. This was my first time using this product, I normally use the Creme Wax but because it would be in my daughter’s room I wanted to make sure it held up to the inevitable wear and tear of little hands.
The Soft Touch varnish is a luxuriously soft, yet durable, polyurethane finish. It is scratch, scuff and fingerprint resistant and is also resistant to most household cleaning chemicals. Which makes it the perfect choice for a piece of furniture that need superior durability, like anything in a kids room.
After a few coats of the varnish it was time to add new and updated hardware. I picked a simple oil-rubbed bronze drawer pull for each of the drawers. I think changing the hardware really transformed this outdated piece of furniture, don’t you agree?
This DIY Chalky Finish nightstand looks great in my daughter’s new room. It matches the bed perfectly and I love that the furniture is a great neutral color and offsets all the other bright and bold colors in the room.
It’s not only pretty, but it’s functional too. Now she has a place for a reading lamp, her alarm clock and drawers to store treasured collections.

Do you have a piece of furniture that needs a new makeover? What Chalky Finish paint color would you use?
This is adorable!! I love making easy for furniture updates like this!!
I have been wondering how easy it was to do a piece of furniture with this & now I know! You make it look pretty easy and I already have some of this paint, now to find a piece to re-do! 😉 Looks great in her room!
Great Makeover on this night stand! It looks a thousand times better now:) I like that you grounded the piece with the black handles! Well done! If you are interested in joining in one more party each week I host Making Broken Beautiful every Thursday thru Sunday and would be happy to host you. You do lovely work! I hope you have a great week!
Smiles!
