Did you know that chili was declared the official state dish of Texas in 1977? It’s easy to see why this all-star dish is so popular. This comforting, versatile meal is relatively inexpensive which makes it great for family dinners and buffet-style parties alike. It’s food that warms the soul and unites family and friends. A warm, hearty bowl of chili hits the spot on a cool evening and everyone will love adding their own toppings from the ultimate chili bar!
This past weekend I hosted a chili bar with and after a friendly neighborhood game of of kick ball everyone was in the mood for a delicious and filling meal. The unique blend of seasonings, good hearty beef and the new thicker recipe delivered that authentic chili taste, just the way us Texans like it!
I loved the fact that after a busy afternoon this party was easy to throw together and budget friendly too! We set-up a table outside since the weather was gorgeous and I used items I had around the house to decorate. I covered the table with burlap and used my rustic pallet backdrop from the PB&J Party to create the ultimate chili bar.
I used the free printables from Amy at Living Locurto and Mason jars filled with beans to create simple decorations for the table.
When I have a buffet style party I always like to put the napkins and utensils together so they are easy to grab and carry. I used mini brown paper bags, burlap, scrapbook paper and the free printables to make these fun utensil holders.
Part of the fun of the chili bar is getting to sample and try different flavor combinations. We had three different varities of chili to choose from; mild, hot and no beans. Guest could fill small white cups for ‘just a taste’ or if they knew what they wanted they could ‘fill er’ up’ in bigger chili bowls. I provided a variety of fix-ins including tomatoes, green chilies, jalapenos, onions, sour cream, and cheese. We also had Frito’s and baked potatoes so guest could enjoy Frito Pie (my favorite) or a loaded baked potato. It was fun to see all the different flavor combinations. My daughter wanted chili without beans, topped with LOTS of Frito’s, tomatoes and cheese. My hubby wanted the hot chili with lots of onions, Frito’s and cheese. And even our little superheros stopped saving the day to fuel up on a hearty bowl of chili!
