Our family is getting ready for a series of several vacations in July. While I’m really looking forward to a nice relaxing break, I’m also starting to fret the whole driving in a car for endless hours with three kids part of the vacation. For the most part our kids are pretty good travelers, but after a while the road starts to get a little rocky and the whining and the “Are we there yet?” moans start to take over. Which is why I’m planning to be armed with a delicious secret weapon, Rocky Road Trail Mix!
This simple and delicious trail mix will be my secret weapon for when the road starts to get a little rocky and my kids just can’t take being in the car anymore. I can see it now, I’ll whip out individual sized containers of this sweet and crunchy snack and peace and order will be restored in the car…at least until they have devoured their treat.
Even if it won’t work like a magic wand this trail mix is the perfect combination of flavors and a delicious snack to pack and take with you anywhere. It’s full of flavors that will remind you of Rocky Road ice cream, but without all the melty mess, which makes it perfect for summer road trips.
This recipe is so easy, you basically dump and stir, but there are a few key tips that make this trail mix irresistible.
First off, you have to head to your local Walmart and pick up a box of Chocolate Cheerios™. I buy Honey Nut Cheerios™ for my kids all the time, but these Chocolate Cheerios™ are the perfect amount of sweet for this treat. And even though they are chocolate they are still packed full of goodness which you have come to expect from Cheerios™.
The next important step that you really don’t want to skip is to toast the almonds. Yes ,you could just open the package of almonds and dump them in, but trust me you want to toast them first. Toasting them brings out the rich, nutty flavor and it really makes a difference in the bold flavor of this snack.
Ok, now that you have those two things the only thing left to do is dump all the ingredients together in a large bowl and mix it up.
Since our trail mix is packed full of flavors just like the popular ice cream flavor I decided to stick with that theme and served it in small ice cream containers with cute wooden spoons. These cute little containers have lids which make it easy to store, and if the kids don’t devour it all at once they can put the lid back on and save it for later.
Pack a few road trip games that will keep them entertained and you are all set. You can find all kinds of free road trip games and printables on Pinterest, road trip bingo, the licence plate game and Mad Libs are just a few of our favorites.
Armed with this Rocky Road Trail Mix I expect for our summer road trip to be full of cheer, or at the very least for there to be a few less whiny moans asking if we are there yet.
