Told you, so many great ideas. Make sure you pop over and visit them for all the details and some freebies too! Now, let’s spice things up with this delicious Spicy Chipotle BBQ Sauce.
My husband loves to barbecue and he is a big fan of spicy stuff so I decided to combine the two for a delicious Father’s Day gift. I’ve never made my own BBQ sauce, but I was surprised at how simple it was to make. I found a basic recipe in my Betty Crocker Cookbook, and just tweaked it a bit to make it the perfect combination of spicy with just a hint of sweet.
Kick things up a notch and put this on your favorite meat before you throw it on the grill. We tried it out with chicken and it was delish!
Since presentation is key I created simple labels and gift tags for this Spicy Chipotle BBQ sauce. My kids and I use the phrase “Awesomesauce” to describe anything we love or things that are “cool.” It makes them giggle every time I say it. And because we think our Dad is pretty awesome we think he will love his Father’s Day Awesomesauce!
You can download the Awesomesauce gift tags, BBQ sauce labels and check out the recipe below for all the spicy details!
- 2 Tbsp olive oil
- 1/2 cup chopped onion
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/3 cup chipotles in adobo sauce, minced
- 1 1/3 cup ketchup
- 1/4-1/2 cup water
- 2 Tbsp cider vinegar
- 2 Tbsp spicy brown mustard
- 3-4 Tbsp brown sugar (depends on how sweet you like it)
- Black pepper
- Salt
- In a medium sauce pan heat the oil
- Saute onions until soft and translucent. Add garlic, stir, and cook for 1 minute more.
- Add the minced chipotles and sauce to the pan.
- Stir in the ketchup, vinegar, mustard, and brown sugar.
- Thin with water to desired consistency (I used about 1/2 cup) and heat just until bubbles begin to appear.
- Taste and season with salt & pepper to taste.
- For smooth sauce, let it cool 5-10 minutes and run it through the blender until smooth.
- Transfer to a Mason jar or airtight bowl and store in the fridge (will keep for 2 weeks).
I love this!! My husband LOVES bbq sauce, so I am going to have my boys help me make this for him for Father’s Day. I downloaded the Awesome sauce tags {so cute!!}. By any chance, would you be willng to also share the label you made for the bottle? I can make my own, but yours is so great because it matches the Awesome sauce tags. Thanks!
Angela, sure I’ll send them over to you via email!
I would love a printable label too. Thanks for the idea. I am so excited to make and give this.
I would really like a printable label also if it’s possible 🙂
Thanks!
Thanks Nancy, I’ll get them over to you shortly!
this is so cool! Going to share on FB:)
I would love the label too, If you don’t mind. Awsome idea!!!!!
Elizabeth, I added the link to download the tags to the post. Let me know if you have trouble downloading it and I can send it via email. 🙂
Hi Mariah, I have a couple of questions for you! What size is the mason jar you used (how many oz)? Second question, where did you buy the pastry brush? Finally, can you please email me a copy of the jar labels? I’m going to make 30 of these with the kids at my church for their dads. I love the idea!
Hi Andrea, I used a pint sized Mason jar, but you could do smaller jars and just divide the recipe equally. I found the party brush at my local grocery store in the kitchen tools section (it came in a set of 3), but you may be able to order them in bulk on Amazon. I love that you are doing this with the kids at church, I bet the dads will love their gift! I’ve emailed the PDF files to you. Have fun!
Could you email me both pdf labels please?
Thanks. I will be making these with my grade 3 and 4 students!
Hi Julie, thank you for your interest in using the printables for our BBQ sauce. You should be able to click the link in the post to download the files, but I have gone ahead and sent them to you via email. Let me know if you have trouble getting the files.
I would love a copy of the label too. I am definitely making this for fathers day. Thank you for such an awesome craft. I love it.
Hi Mary, you can download both of the free printable tags at the bottom of the post (they are right above the recipe.) Let me know if you have trouble downloading them.
Mariah.
I have a question… can u tell me how much this recipe makes per jars.. I am thinking of making this for my sunday school kids to give to there dads… and how long does it keep in the jars..???? this is a great idea… I have at 15 to 18 4yrs olds for my class.
Hi Joy! The recipe makes roughly 2-3 cups, enough to fill the pint mason jar I used to store it in. You could use smaller jars to make the recipe go further for all of the students in your class. It will keep for 2-3 weeks if kept tightly sealed and stored in the refrigerator, although I have kept mine for up to a month. If you have any other questions feel free to email me at mariah(at)gigglesgalore(dot)net.
