Homemade Cinnamon Rolls with Orange Cream Cheese Icing

Serves: 2 dozen
  • Cinnamon Rolls
  • ½ cup warm water
  • 1 tbsp yeast
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp butter (or shortening)
  • 1 egg
  • 3 cups flour
  • Chopped nuts (optional)
  • Brown sugar
  • Cinnamon
  • Butter
  • Orange Cream Cheese Icing
  • 8 oz cream cheese (room temperature
  • 2½ c. powdered sugar
  • Juice of 1 orange
  • 2 tsp. orange zest
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  1. Add yeast to warm water and let stand, can add a pinch of sugar
  2. Heat sour cream to lukewarm and stir in sugar, baking soda, yeast, salt and butter.
  3. Stir to melt butter
  4. Add egg and flour, mix well
  5. Roll out dough to ¼ inch thick
  6. Spread with butter and sprinkle to taste with brown sugar, cinnamon, and chopped nuts
  7. Roll up tightly and pinch the seam closed
  8. Cut the roll into ½ to 1 inch slices.
  9. Dip both sides in melted butter and place them an inch or so apart in a baking dish
  10. Allow to rise until doubled in size.
  11. Bake at 350 ºF for 20 minutes, until golden brown
  12. Let cool and and make the orange cream cheese icing
  13. Orange Cream Cheese Icing
  14. Cream together the softened cream cheese and 2 cups of powdered sugar
  15. Beat in the orange juice, zest and vanilla extract.
  16. Thicken frosting by adding additional powdered sugar a ¼ cup at a time to achieve desired consistency.
