When I think of summer I am immediately drawn to images of popsicles, flip flops and the sun setting on the beach. This DIY summer sunset pallet sign art is the perfect way to bring the vibrant colors of summer into my home. I recently used DecoArt Premium Acrylic paint to create this simple summer sunset on an unfinished wood pallet sign and love the results.
I grew up in a small town on the Gulf Coast and there is nothing quite as glorious as watching the sun set over the bay in the summer. The colors rapidly change from deep hues of purple and pink to orange and yellow before fading away into the ocean. Watching the sunset on a hot summer night was one of my favorite things about summer.
The vibrant colors of a sunset in summer are truly magical and I decided to capture them in a simple piece of artwork. As the season’s change, I love being able to create personalized signs and art that I can display in my home. I’ve always loved changing out the decorations on my mantel and I especially love when I can add my own personal touch to those decorations.
Over the year’s I’ve pushed myself to get more creative with my artwork, like the Abstract Sunset Painting I made a few years ago. But, if I’m being completely honest I still love a simple color pallet with easy layers, which is why I love this new piece of summer art so much. Since the premium acrylic paints are designed with a slightly elevated formula, that is specifically designed to help take the intimidation factor out of fine art painting, it makes them ideal for any type of personalized artwork.
These paints are medium-bodied which means awesome coverage and they are easy to mix and blend. I used a bunch of vibrant colors that reminded me of the sunset on the beach and added them to my paint pallet, and then just started layering paint on the unfinished wood sign.
I started by brushing the darkest color of paint on my wooden palette towards the top.
Next, I created a layered look by brushing and blending the other colors from darkest to lightest on the wood surface. Acrylic paint dries quickly, which makes it great for layering. I just continued to blend the colors until the wooden pallet reminded me of my favorite summer sunset.
While the colors were perfect as is, I knew I wanted the artwork to have a little something extra. So, I used my Cricut Maker to cut out the vinyl saying “Summer is my Favorite Color” in a bright aqua that reminds me of the ocean.
I layered that vinyl saying on top of the sunset canvas for a quick, easy and personalized piece of summer artwork.
I love how this simple painting captures one of my favorite summer memories, watching the sunset over the ocean near my hometown.
