Hey Giggles Galore readers! It’s Cathy from Party HarDIY here with a fun DIY Snow Cone Earrings project for you. If you’re like me, you find that summer is the perfect time to be a little more adventurous with your wardrobe. Maybe it’s the brighter colors or the warmer weather that makes us happier , but there’s something about stepping out of your comfort zone- especially with accessories! I personally love wearing quirky earrings, so I decided to debut something fun this summer- snow cone earrings! They’re really lightweight and can be made to match any outfit. I have a sneaking suspicion that I’ll be wearing these all summer long.
You will need:
- Bumpy (not smooth) styrofoam balls like these
- Scrapbook paper
- Acrylic paint
- White glitter
- Head Pins
- Earring hooks
- Jewelry tools
- Scissors
- Paper clip
Directions:
The first step is to paint your styrofoam balls with your choice of colors. Dip a thin brush lightly into the paint, brush off the excess, and dab it gently into the styrofoam ball. The idea is to make the coat somewhat sheer, so it looks like it’s poured over the ice instead of painted on. You can mix and match the colors or do a single color snow cone.
After it dries, add a thin layer of mod podge, then sprinkle some glitter on top to make it look like glistening ice! I used a white glitter that didn’t have any other tones.
After your styrofoam ball is completely dry (which happens really fast!) it’s time to assemble the earrings. Place the head pin in the center and use your round nose pliers to create a loop on the end. Make sure you’re careful so that you don’t push the base of the headpin through and break it all.
Place your earring hook onto the loop and use your needle nose pliers to close it.
Print out your snow cone wrapper template and cut it out. Trace it onto your scrapbook paper (or regular printer paper, like I used) and cut it out. Then roll it and secure it with a paperclip to keep the shape.
With your paperclip still on, glue your cone shut. I glued the bottom (pointy part) first, then took off the paperclip and glued the top. This is the best way to ensure it stays the right shape and you don’t burn your fingers. Trim any excess paper off so that it looks nice and neat.
Put a small dab of glue at the bottom of your styrofoam ball to secure the head pin in place so it won’t pop through. Then, glue your snow cone wrapper onto the styrofoam ball using a hot glue gun.
Now you’ve got a perfect set of earrings to wear with all your favorite summer outfits. These would make a great camp or sleepover activity for kids and teens- we all know how much they love snow cones!
These would also make a great Fourth of July accessory- just make the snow cones red, white and blue! You’ve got a sweet summer ahead.
These are SO dang cute! I love making accessories that look like food, so these are perfect. Genius idea to use bumpy styrofoam balls to get the right texture
