Three years ago I started the tradition of having a special Back to School Breakfast on the first day of school and it’s funny to hear how much it means to my kids. Last night while we were getting ready for bed my oldest asked me if we were having a special 1st day of school breakfast just like we did last year. I love that she remembers it and that she associates the 1st day of school with a simple tradition that turns an ordinary event into an extraordinary memory.
Of course, I couldn’t start the new school year without a little celebration! I gathered up some school supplies and decorations from our previous Back to School party and set the table after the kiddos went to bed for a fun morning surprise. I used old cafeteria lunch trays I’d picked up and the flea market to serve a simple breakfast with blueberry muffins, mini pancakes, fruit and Greek yogurt.
Each year I like to give the kids a fun little gift to celebrate the start of the new school year. This year I gave them little apple shaped notebooks, new crayons, bookmarks and little jars with apple flavored jelly beans.
I love that my kids are excited about heading back to school. I hope that this year will be full of new adventures that will help them build character. I hope that they will continue to get excited about learning and the passion and excitement they feel today at our Back to School Breakfast will continue throughout the year!
Do you and your family have any favorite Back to School traditions?

How sweet!!! I love the stacked pancakes. I hope your kids have a great first day of school! 🙂 We never had first day of school traditions growing up but I will start new ones once my little one is school-aged.

How cute! My daughter isn’t in public school yet but she started primary school at her montessori school today – trying to start new traditions!

I love that tradition. My little one is only in MDO but we will definitely have to do that.

Found your blog from the ridiculous (and envy-laden) “Pinterest B****es” blog post. And I’m so glad to have found you. Just wanted to let you know that I think this is a WONDERFUL idea and such a sweet love letter to your kids each year. I did the same for my kindergartner this morning (before I even knew your blog existed!) and I have to say, the look on her face when she walked into the kitchen was worth every minute I stayed up past midnight stickering her place mat, printing off her previous “Back to School” photos for display and making our table look special for her big day. I can’t believe the audacity of some people to take something so special and something meant clearly for kids (not as a “look at how awesome I am!” mom project) and post such hateful words. Absolutely ridiculous! I’ve had several similar comments come my way after my kids’ birthday parties and such, and you just have to let them slide. Keep doing what you’re doing! 🙂

Haley, thank you so much for the sweet comment! I’m not perfect and like a million other moms I drop the ball from time to time. But these types of events are my way of making memories with my kids and building family traditions (my mom used to do this for us as kids, long before Pinterest was around!) I love how you describe it as a “love letter” and it warms my heart to hear that your little one experienced such joy this morning before they headed out the door for a new adventure!

Great idea! I’m from Brazil and by the end of this year, my kid will have a graduation party. I wanna make a party! Where can I find those napkins?? Just in love with them! Can I buy online? Thank you!!
Mariah says
Thank you! I found the napkins at Target in their Dollar Section, I’m not sure if you can find them online or not. Good luck and have fun planning a special memory for your kiddos!
